SUMMARY OF BSI METHOD

Those simple pictures and symbols are used as a reminiscent of the lexical items of each reading and listening passages from the course book. In this way, students get a chance to code the message with the aid of visual elements. To harmonise their previous learning with the recently learnt items, and associate with some kind of context are paramount. Thus, retaining of information is very much eased in that way. They never ever focus on the language directly; but they all focus on the topic. In fact, in the main course book which the creator of this method uses, there are many topics including different features of countries and people around the world. From this point of view, they live everything in the class, so the context turns into their own life experiences. As a result of using all the elements of drama, they learn the topic.

Students also provide and react to content through Picture notebooks. They draw the clumsy pictures on their picture notebooks during the lesson but no words in it because they are allowed to use their own picture notebooks during their exams* as well.

Moreover students use Class notebooks to note the new words which they learn during the lesson according to the context, with their phonetic symbols.

When the teacher presents the new topic through the lexical items of the reading/listening passage, he/she visualizes it by the clumsy pictures and does lots of repetitions. After that as a last stage of the lesson the students are asked to work in pairs for practising the passage once more through the clumsy pictures.

They also all have huge "Vocabulary notebooks (portfolio)". In fact these are much more than vocabulary notebooks; they are sectioned according to topics such as jobs, environment, colours, etc. When they go home, they draw the coloured clumsy pictures of the topic and the original sentences which associate the pictures.

Both class notebooks and vocabulary notebooks also aid students to improve their productive knowledge of vocabulary. As their homework students have to write the context, sentence by sentence with clumsy pictures to their vocabulary notebooks.
