SUMMARY OF BSI METHOD

As well as they have vocabulary files, the students also keep diaries. This is not an ordinary diary reflecting their daily actions; instead it is a way of creating their own stories inspired by the course book's phrases and topics. They also brainstorm while speaking and writing their diaries, while doing so, they do not just repeat the usual order of real events in their life, but they mix reality with their new experiences and habits they have during the lesson. They use some structures beyond their present knowledge (passive voice, noun or relative clause etc) in their dialogues and writings easily since they learn the sentences as a pattern. These diaries are our evidence to show how they can easily adapt the things they have learned into their life.

The teacher checks their vocabulary notebooks and diaries every week. Since the teacher wants the students to do the self-correction, he/she only underlines the mistakes instead of correcting them with a red pen. As a second step of the error correction the teacher gives back their notebooks and asks students to correct their own mistake and then bring back for checking again.

They learn many contexts that contain a great deal of vocabulary and different structures. They have got a special, colourful dictionary created by themselves with amazing pictures in their mind. It should be mentioned that each clumsy picture-symbol is created by the teacher and the students who work together on it. So that particular dictionary becomes special to this particular class since the ideas come from students of that class. That means each class will form its own dictionary with the help of their teacher while they still use the same method.

The students are not allowed to use a bilingual dictionary and even not to think in their native language. They learn logs that contained mini-projects, stories, and collected information. The point is that the students are constantly producing in English. Rather than simply using their bought books, they are writing books themselves!

In this new method speaking clubs are another vital activity. At the first week of the semester teacher divides the class into groups (preferably even number of groups) and the members of the group give their phone numbers and e-mail addresses each other. Then every weekend they meet for speaking clubs. During these meetings they communicate with each other by English only and also they record their voices during their conversation about the contexts and the dialogues (Attachment 7- one sample of students' record). These are special occasions for them to practice their English outside of the classroom. This activity is not limited by only meetings but also sending messages in English through the internet and mobile phones.

"Use your imagination and speak English" is the motto of this method.

But the most important thing is the teacher's and the students' sense of cooperation. They all should be like such close friends. Good relationship among the members of a class is essential in language learning. It is in the nature of language. Language exists to help two or more people reach an understanding.
